Process
With its white shingle façade, dormer windows, and green copper shingle roof, this house stands apart from the traditional brick Georgians and Colonials that line a prominent residential corridor in Richmond, Virginia. Designed by architect Duncan Lee, the 1916 home features signature elements from the Colonial Revival and American Arts and Crafts movements. In deference to the original structure, the design team sited the addition in an L-shape to conceal much of the new structure in the back. In addition to renovating the kitchen, living and dining rooms, and garden room, 3North designed a second-story bunk room and bath for the children above the garage. A hallway connects it to the rest of the house, creating overhead cover for the bluestone walkway linking the mudroom and garage.
