A new chapter in historic Gibson Island’s storied past lies in the recent transformation of their three most iconic and loved buildings. Captained by a select group of the Island’s members, the Gibson Island Corporation sought to renew the traditions and experiences of this Olmsted designed community on the Chesapeake Bay that had, over time, fallen into disarray. 3North utilized their IQ process to collaborate with the Corporation and its many stakeholders. Three design themes emerged which guided the design of the projects:
Time & Again – The Architecture of the American Summer
Time & Tide – Home Is the Sailor, Home from the Sea
Time & Tradition – The Things that Matter Never Change
With this new vision for the island, a new clubhouse and major renovations to both their boathouse and overnight cottages were targeted, each carrying a unique narrative in the history of the Island that was to be preserved, while also presenting distinct challenges in their modernization. The completed projects stand together, offering places to create a next generation of memories experiences alongside the still celebrated stories of the Island’s past.
